Arthur Andersen LLP is proud to continue to provide selected tax case studies and solutions for use by the academic community. These case studies, first used in the 1996 and 1997 nationwide Arthur Andersen Tax Challenge competitions, can be used to supplement materials presented in your first course in federal taxation in either the undergraduate or graduate programs. Included in this collection are four case studies and solutions. They are based on federal tax issues that confront an individual or family with business interests, investments, salary, and itemized deductions Each case and solution has been updated to reflect tax law in effect on March 31, 1997. The cases and solutions do not reflect tax law changes made in the Taxpayer's Relief Act of 1997.
Tax Challenge is an innovative program that provides students with an experience simulating real-world tax consulting while demonstrating the benefits of a team approach to problem solving. During the Tax Challenge, teams of four students have seven hours to complete their solutions. The only reference materials available to the students during the competition are the Internal Revenue Code and Treasury Regulations.
Participation in Tax Challenge continues to grow. In 1997, 119 teams from approximately 100 different institutions participated. Students first meet in a regional competition held at selected universities throughout the country in late October. Twenty teams, ten each from the graduate and the undergraduate divisions, are selected to compete at the national competition held in mid-November at the Arthur Andersen Center for Professional Education in St. Charles, Illinois. The participating teams in Tax Challenge vie for scholarship money provided by the Andersen Foundation.
