News Story

When Andre Benjamin (a.k.a. Andre 3000) recently announced that his new fashion-apparel line would debut in fall of 2005, the hip-hop star wasn't merely exposing himself as just another rap artist-turned-opportunist; instead, the famously fashionable singer from the pop-music duo OutKast was signaling a sea change for the urban-wear clothing market.

Nearly every popular recording artist seems to get a signature clothing line these days, but the new fashion designs developed by the 29-year-old rap artist are expected to challenge current urban-wear trends that typically "dress down" to impress. With a fashion ensemble that includes platinum wigs and ski boots, Andre Benjamin has become one of the most conspicuously dressed men in the world. His sense of style is so innovative and classy that he was recently declared "world's best dressed man" by Esquire magazine. And while "Dre" has been known to don everything from multicolor boas to football pads, he is now often seen in blazers and ties--a signature of a new fashion movement he dubs the "gentleman rebel."

Famous for playing "Andre 3000" in the Beatlesesque "Hey Ya!" video, Dre attracts attention everywhere he goes. He eschewed the standard hip-hop uniform of sportswear and designer labels in favor of his own vintage look, and his new clothing line is said to be influenced more by his idols Ralph Lauren and Prince than by Russell Simmons. According to the latest buzz, Andre's designs will honor his fashion forebears (think 1930s-style plaid knickers and vibrant cashmere vests) and display the same detail as the Turnbull & Asser shirts and John Lobb shoes that he favors.

In one recent public outing, Andre was seen sporting a prototype from his forthcoming clothing line: a crisp apple-green shirt, a straw hat, loose black pants with gold stars up the sides, sandals and green-and-red socks. If Andre's fashions turn out to be as infectious as his hit songs, it could signal the end for ball caps and baggy sportswear.
