News Story 

Demand for services that provide overseas workers with access to health care and security information has risen sharply since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. These companies rely on a network of health care providers operating throughout the world. Travelers who need medical care call a 24-hour service center or use the Internet. Employees can also get information on doctors and health care facilities before they begin overseas assignments.

Employees who use these services have access to quality care, which means less chance that a sick or injured employee will need to be sent back to the United States for treatment. Workers are more likely to complete a foreign assignment if their families have quality medical care.

One company provides information on health conditions in 200 cities outside the United States, lists of providers and emergency numbers, security updates, travel news, medical terms translation, appointment requests, and other services. It also offers supplemental medical coverage for business travelers. Security information has become a popular feature for employees.

Another company provides medical-record storage. An employee carries a card indicating that his or her medical records are stored online, and available to health care providers.
