News Story

To fast track your career, you should change jobs often, and work in different countries, business units and organizations. This diversity in experience will become even more important than qualifications over time.

HR practitioners identify working flexible or reduced hours as one of the factors most likely to impede career progression. Three times as many HR practitioners believe that working long hours is positive for your career than those who believe it is negative.

Ninety percent of respondents, however, say that work-life balance is important for their workforces and will present a challenge for organizations.

Two-thirds of respondents believe there is still a glass ceiling for women.

Questions
1.

Flextime working arrangements have become more common in recent years. Should employers penalize employees for choosing a flexible schedule when it comes time for promotions? How do you feel about this? What are the advantages and disadvantages to an employer of permitting flextime?

2.

If work-life balance is as important as the respondents reported, what kinds of things should companies be doing to help employees find this balance, besides encourage flexible work hours?
