News Story

By 2012, about 20 percent of the nation's workforce will be age 55 or older, according to the American Association for Retired People. AARP recognized St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington, Va. as one of the top 35 employers in the nation for people ages 50 and over. 467 of the center's 2,212 employees are 50 or older, with about 30 employees aged 65 and up. Nearly half of all the employees at St. Mary's have worked there for more than ten years. Some of the efforts St. Mary's makes for its older workforce include:

  • 100 percent payment for medical care costs
  • A retirement plan that is subsidized by the hospital and based on a percentage of the five highest-paid years the employee worked at St. Mary's, which allows those who need to cut back on hours as they near retirement, the relief of knowing it will not cut their benefits
  • Lunch and learn seminars that offer information on topics like estate planning and caring for aging parents
  • Free medical screenings several times a year for things like breast, skin, and prostate cancer
  • Employee banquets for those with ten or more years of tenure and discounted classes at the local university
  • West Virginia University Hospitals was also recognized by the AARP as having an environment friendly to an older workforce. Some of its efforts include:
  • Training programs and tuition reimbursement to help those that are making the change from other industries to get up to speed
  • Part-time employees can receive full-time benefits if they are phasing into retirement
  • Safe work environment and technology that can help older workers do the job easier, like the new hospital beds that lift patients into standing and sitting positions, work that used to have to be done with a nurse's own strength
  • Questions
    1.

Offering special benefits to retain older, experienced workers implies that members of this age group have something unique and worthwhile to contribute to the workplace environment. Imagine that you are the HR Director for a medium-size hospital that would like to implement a benefits program targeted to over-55 workers, similar to the one at St. Mary's. Draft a memo that lays out your recommendations with a rationale for what the return on investment will be for the company.

    2.

The current trend is for people to work longer, past the age at which many retired in the past. What is your prediction for your own retirement timeline and what factors do you think will come into play to influence your decision?
