Vice President & Team Director
Team directors oversee the operations of various discipline publishing programs.
Mike Roche has moved into the position of Vice President and Team Director for the Business Law, Economics, Finance and Management Team at South-Western. Mike was previously the Vice President and Publisher at The Dryden Press. Mike brings 20 years of publishing experience with him. He began his career as a sales representative with Holt, Rinehart and Winston of Canada in 1980. After three successful years in sales, he began his editorial career as the business and economics editor for Canada. Mike moved to the United States in 1987 and has held a variety of marketing and editorial positions in his career while with The Dryden Press, Harcourt College Publishers, HarperCollins, and Pearson.

Mike received a B.A. from the University or Prince Edward Island and a Masters degree from the University of Western Ontario. In his spare time Mike pursues the elusive muskellunge. [Back to Top]

Publisher of Economics
The publisher leads the way in a publishing discipline, analyzing the needs of the list and developing a comprehensive strategy for the discipline team.

Mike Mercier was recently promoted from Sr. Acquisitions Editor for Finance to Publisher of Economics. Mike managed South-Western's Finance list and now oversees its Economics list. He brings to this position a breadth of publishing experience, having worked in advertising at The Salem Evening News and PC WEEK Magazine, and as a marketing manager at Houghton Mifflin College Publishing. At Houghton Mifflin Mike was responsible for marketing the entire business list, which included Accounting, Business Communication, Economics, Management, and Marketing. Earlier in his career, Mike held positions in market research and in management consulting in the health care industry.

Mike received a B.A. in Psychology from Vassar College and an M.B.A. in Marketing from The University of Michigan Business School. He enjoys books on psychology and religion, and camping in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. [Back to Top]

Acquisitions Editor
The acquisitions editor leads the way on specific titles in a publishing discipline, also analyzing the needs of the list and signing authors accordingly.
Peter Adams became the Senior Acquisitions Editor for Economics in the fall of 2001, returning to South-Western after spending six years as the Philosophy and Religion editor at Cengage's Wadsworth Publishing Co., where he doubled the sales of that list. Prior to this, he was for three years a South-Westen rep and B&E specialist in the Northeast, and counts the signing of Mark Lieberman as one of the highlights of his time in the field. From 1984 to 1992, Peter was a rep and regional manager for Harper Collins, nee Harper & Row.

Peter has a B.A. in Economics from Colby College, and his earlier career was in the military and working for Procter & Gamble prior to finding his home in the world of college text publishing. [Back to Top]

Mike Worls has been an Acquisitions Editor for the Economics discipline with the Marketing, Economics, Finance and Management Team at South-Western since July 1, 2000. Mike helped The Economics team exceed both their signing and sales goal in his first year as AE. Prior to his promotion to Acquisitions Editor, he had noteworthy success in his three years as the Marketing Manager for West Legal Studies in Business. Mike was named South-Western's Marketing Manager of the year for 1999, and on numerous occasions was part of the team, which won the company's best sales presentation award. Mike also won S-W's Marketing Innovation award for 1998 and 2000. Prior to the Marketing Manager position, Mike spent three years as a sales representative for South-Western Publishing and West Publishing.

Mike received a B.S. in Marketing from the University of Dayton in 1992 (Go Flyers!) and received his M.B.A. from Xavier University in 1999. In his spare time, Mike is an avid baseball fan and also enjoys traveling, scuba diving and spending time with his family -- especially his nieces, Mollie and Megan. [Back to Top]

Marketing Manager
The marketing manager determines how best to market and promote the products on the list.

Janet Hennies is the Senior Marketing Manager on our Economics list. She started her publishing career in 1996 at Harcourt College Publishers as a sales representative for the Minnesota territory. Achieving awards such as Rookie of the Year and placing in the Top Performers Club each sales year, her career path took her to driving the sales success of the Mankiw Principles of Economics, 2e project. The Mankiw Principles text ranked #1 for both the principles of microeconomics, and principles of macroeconomics courses. The book shipped over 250,000 units in the first year of publication for the second edition. Janet joined the South-Western economics team after the Cengage- Harcourt merger in 2001. She was awarded the Marketing Manager of the Year for 2001 and 2002.

Janet received a B.A. degree from University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, with a double major in Marketing and Business Communication and a minor in Economics. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family (husband Sam and Son Jack), training the family dog Miko, and training for triathlons. [Back to Top]

Lisa Lysne is the Senior Marketing Manager for the Economics discipline with the Marketing, Economics, Finance and Management team at South-Western. She has spent eleven years in college publishing, starting as a sales representative in a Wisconsin-based territory. She subsequently held a position as a technology sales specialist and then joined South-Western as the Economics marketing manager in September 1996.

Lisa received a B.A. degree from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, with a triple major in Economics, Spanish and International Studies. [Back to Top]

Editorial Assistant
The editorial assistant supports all of the positions within a discipline's publishing team.

Sarah Curtis is the Editorial Assistant for the Economics team at South-Western. She began her career at South-Western in August 2001. Currently, Sarah assists authors, professors, students and co-workers in the Economics discipline. She works in many areas: developing, promoting, and organizing textbooks through the publishing process.

Sarah, originally from Michigan, graduated cum laude from Miami University with a B.S. in Mass Communication. Currently, she is working towards her Masters in Communication at the University of Dayton.

In her spare time Sarah enjoys baking (mostly desserts), working out, and being with friends and family. [Back to Top]

Steve Joos joined South-Western in November 2002 as an Editorial Assistant. Prior to coming to South-Western, he spent several months teaching at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Unable to get the chalk completely out of his blood, he continues on as an adjunct instructor for a variety of composition and literature courses at the college. Steve graduated from Xavier University in 2000 with a BA in English and a minor in Natural Science and graduated with great distinction from Saint Louis University with an MA in English Literature in 2002.

In particular, Steve is excited about the role of the written word as it has been given new life through technology. One of his main hobbies deals with hypertext and the layers of substance it creates. To that end, he has a growing web site, although he is also attempting to publish a traditional, scholarly article on one author's attempt to write the blues in novel form. Also, he enjoys concerts, road trips, and deconstructing the postmodern superego. [Back to Top]

Developmental Editors
Developmental editors work directly with the authors in order to develop succesful books that meet the highest academic and pedagogical standards.

Jennifer is a Developmental Editor on the Economics/Finance/Marketing and Management team. She began her career at South-Western as an editorial assistant in 1999 and quickly became interested in development. Jennifer works with authors primarily in the economics, finance and business law disciplines, including Roger Arnold, Robert Strong, and George Siedel.

Jennifer graduated cum laude from West Virginia University with a B.A. in Literature. In her spare time she enjoys reading (of course!), music, art, and travel. [Back to Top]

Jan Lamar has been involved in college publishing for twenty-four years. She began her career in sales and since that time has also held the positions of field manager, acquisitions editor, and regional sales manager. Thirteen years ago she elected to work as a developmental editor, and has been pleased to have been involved with such market leading texts as West's Business Law, Business Law Today, and West's Legal Environment of Business.

Jan received a B.A. in History from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an M.B.A. from California State University, Fullerton.

Jan enjoys spending time with her family (which involves watching a lot of soccer), camping, water sports, golf, and when time permits relaxing with a good book. She also enjoys watching the Denver Broncos, Colorado Avalanche, and the Colorado Rockies. [Back to Top]

Andy McGuire is a Developmental Editor with the Economics, Marketing, Finance and Management team at South-Western. He works with such authors as Irvin Tucker, Fred Gottheil, Robert Carbaugh and Rene Stulz. Andy received a B.A. in English/Creative Writing at Miami University and an M.A. in English/Literature at Ohio University.

Andy has taught English at both the college and high school levels and has worked as a freelance illustrator for such companies as World Book Publishing and Standard Publishing. While earning his Master's Degree, Andy was the Production Editor of Quarter After Eight: A Journal of Prose and Commentary. He enjoys writing fiction and painting and has had his artwork on display in a local gallery. [Back to Top]

Sarah has worked as an Editorial Assistant for Economics, and is now a Developmental Editor for Economics. Some of her titles include Mankiw's Principles of Economics, Baumol and Blinder's Economics: Principles and Policy, and Salvatore's Managerial Economics.

Prior to joining South-Western Sarah held a variety of positions in education and business. She worked as an Adjunct Professor of English at the University of Cincinnati-Clermont College, an English Teacher at Wyoming High School, a Sales Representative at Rorer Pharmaceuticals, and a Methods Analyst at Western Southern Life Insurance Company.

Sarah received an MS in Education from the University of Dayton, and a BA in English at the University of Cincinnati. She also participated in the Ohio Writing Project at Miami University.

After hours, she stays busy with her husband and two boys, and singing in the May Festival Chorus. [Back to Top]

Bob has been an editor at South-Western for twelve years. Recent projects on which Bob is working or has worked include Economics, Revised 2e by Hall and Lieberman; The Financial System and the Economy, 3e by Burton and Lombra; Business: Its Legal, Ethical and Global Environment, 6e by Jennings; Anderson's Business Law and the Legal Environment, 18e by Twomey et al.; and Business Law for a New Century, 2e by Beatty and Samuelson.

Prior to coming to South-Western, Bob spent ten years in religious trade publishing in Philadelphia. He has an M.B.A. from Widener University and an M.A. in economics from the University of Cincinnati. Bob is also an adjunct assistant professor of business and economics at the Cincinnati Branch of Wilmington College. [Back to Top]

Susan C. Smart is a Senior Developmental Editor with the Marketing, Economics, Finance and Management team at South-Western. She has been a Developmental Editor since 1987, when she began her career in publishing with West Educational Publishing. Susan has worked in a variety of disciplines including Marketing, Information Systems and Accounting, as well as those on her current team. Susan presently works with authors such as R. Charles Moyer (Contemporary Financial Management, Managerial Economics), Jeff Madura (International Financial Management, Financial Markets and Institutions), Steven Landsburg (Price Theory and Applications), Janet Ashcroft and Senator John Ashcroft (Law for Business) and a long list of many other well-known texts.

Susan's second main interest is science, and she received a B.A. in Science and Culture from Purdue University. Other interests include the theater arts, tutoring for the local literacy program, travelling to new places and, yes, reading. [Back to Top]

Sr. Media Technology Editor
The Media Technology Editor is the product manager for all technology products and services within a publishing discipline.

Vicky is the Senior Media Technology Editor for the Economics, Finance, and Marketing Team at West Legal Studies in Business and South-Western. Before moving to the U.S. in December 1999, Vicky worked as a freelance copyeditor, developmental editor, and web developer from her hometown in south-central Ontario, Canada. Vicky played a key role in the development of Neal Hannon's The Business of the Internet in which she had an opportunity to hone her Internet skills, including HTML and JavaScript. Vicky was first introduced to South-Western when she was hired as the primary freelancer for TaxPoint.

Prior to freelancing, Vicky spent 6 years as a manager/recruiter in the sales industry. She received a BA in English and a BA in History from Laurentian University. [Back to Top]

Media Developmental Editor
The Media Developmental Editor coordinates and manages development for all technology products and services within a publishing discipline.

Peggy Buskey is a Media Developmental Editor with the Marketing, Economics, Finance, and Management Team at South-Western. She began her career at South-Western in 1994 as a Team Assistant with the Marketing and Management Team and two years later was promoted to Production Editor with her current team. She then joined the Media Department as a Media Production Editor and was promoted to her current position, Media Developmental Editor.

Before entering the publishing world, Peggy worked as the office manager for an architectural firm. She earned a B.A. in English Literature and a minor in Sociology at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. In her spare time she enjoys learning as much as she can about the Internet and keeping physically fit. [Back to Top]

Pam Wallace is a Media Production Editor with the Marketing, Economics, Finance, and Management Team at South-Western. Pam began her career with Cengage in 1986 working as a Customer Service Representative. She joined the marketing department as Marketing Assistant in 1994 and then moved to Executive Assistant/Marketing Coordinator in 1998 working on Cengage wide initiatives.

Prior to becoming a Media Production Editor Pam worked for Cengage Learning Custom Publishing where she had been a Digital Project Leader since June of 1998. In that position Pam managed Custom's digital database, TextChoice. Pam had been the driving force behind Custom's development and implementation of TextChoice bringing TextChoice from its infancy to a pivotal tool for Custom. [Back to Top]

Production Editors
The production editors manage the processes necessary to turn an author's manuscript into a finished book.

Starratt Alexander is a Production Editor for the Economics, Finance, Marketing, and Management team. She began her career in publishing as a temporary Marketing Assistant for South-Western Educational Publishing, and was hired on a permanent basis as the Administrative Assistant for the Marketing and Production teams at South-Western College Publishing. A year-and-a-half later, she was promoted to Production Editor for her current team. Prior to joining South-Western, Starratt was a marketing assistant for a Chicago product development consulting company, where she assisted in the development and composition of the company's proposals.

Starratt graduated Cum Laude from Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana with a B.A. in History and minors in Art and English. In her spare time, she enjoys trying to keep in shape and spending time with friends and family. [Back to Top]

Dan Plofchan has been a Production Editor with the Economics, Finance, Marketing, and Management Team since December, 2000. Prior to joining South-Western, he was the Director of Marketing and Operations for the Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities' distance-learning program, MUCIA Global. His diverse professional background includes seven years of management experience with The Gap, Inc.; two years of teaching Speech, Theatre Arts and Debate at Incarnate Word High School in San Antonio; and two years of directing the On the Scene Teen Theatre, a volunteer teen peer-education program, which earned a regional J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award for Group Volunteerism. Dan is also the co-owner of an independent video production company, Artemis Studios, which has produced educational programming for American Express Financial Advisors, the Buckeye Ranch Foundation, International Engineering Consortium, Ohio Arts Council, The Ohio State University and the Wellness Forum.

Dan graduated Magna Cum Laude from Loras College in Dubuque, IA, with a double major in German and Scenography and a double minor in History and Political Science. He holds an Ohio Secondary Education Teaching Certificate in Comprehension Social Studies and has done graduate work in Education at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. Libby Shipp is a Senior Production Editor for the Marketing, Economics, Finance, and Management Team at South-Western. She began as a Production Editor in the Fall of 1998. In January 2002 Libby was promoted to Senior Production Editor.

Libby graduated from Miami University with a B.S. in Marketing and International Business, and has been working in college publishing ever since. [Back to Top]

Marketing Coordinator
The responsibilities of the marketing coordinator include developing and maintaining marketing databases and creating presentation materials for the marketing managers.

Jenny Fruechtenicht has been with South-Western since 1999, and is currently the Senior Marketing Coordinator for Economics, Business Communication, Decision Sciences and Business Math. She graduated from Miami University with a B.S. in Marketing and a minor in French.

Manufacturing Coordinator
The manufacturing coordinator is responsible for managing the manufacturing tasks for a publishing team's books and products.

Sandee Milewski is the 1st print Manufacturing Coordinator for the Business Law, Economics, Finance, and Management team at South-Western. Prior to working with this team she focused her attention working on the Marketing, Quantitative Methods, Human Resources, Business Communications and Management disciplines. She has coordinated the printing of books by authors such as Guffey, Hellreigel, Lamb, Hitt, Anderson,Sweeney,Williams, Semenik, Gitman, McDaniel/Gates, Lehman, and Zikmund, to name a few. Sandee joined the Manufacturing Dept. in 1997 as a Reprint Coordinator for the Educational Division. Prior to her position as a Reprint Coordinator she worked for three years in various positions for Cengage Learning Distribution.

Before coming to South-Western Publishing, Sandee was a customer service representative for Kenner Products in the Customer Service Dept. During this time, Sandee attended University of Cincinnati, part time (nights and weekends) and earned an Associates Degree, majoring in Marketing and Management.

Sandee has 3 grown children and enjoys spending time with them. In her spare time she likes to do some gardening and go to the movies with her husband. [Back to Top]

Team Assistant
The team assistant takes care of the administrative needs of the team director.

As Team Assistant, Vicki Hunter Ross lends support to the Team Director by promoting team-wide initiatives and facilitating team projects, tracking and reporting responsibilities.

The recipient of both Academic and Special Abilities Scholarships, Vicki's liberal arts education included a double major in Piano and Voice and a minor in Fine Art. Vicki continued studies in piano at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music; and was auditioned by the late Richard Collins, Artistic Director of the Cincinnati Ballet, to win a position as a piano accompanist in CCM's Dance Division. She has sung with both the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and The Cincinnati Symphony's May Festival Chorus and Chamber Choir. Vicki has also worked as a professional photographer. In 1990, she was awarded the Bronze Quill, Award of Excellence for Black & White Photography from the International Association of Business Communicators and received a First Place Award for Black & White Photography in the Cincinnati Editors Association Publications Contest.

In addition to a love of photography, Vicki's other interests include nature, wildlife, writing, and a fascination with the publishing process. She especially enjoys spending time with her two grown children, Jen and Matt. [Back to Top]
