Chapter 22 - Measuring a Nation’s Income

Data on Income and Output

The official source of data on the performance of the overall U.S. economy is the Bureau of Economic Analysis. There are tables and charts that illustrate the data.

Data Charts

It’s easy to find raw data, but much harder to have it plotted in a way that helps you understand what it means. Check out all the charts available at Economagic.com: Economic Time Series Page. Not only can you chart the economic data on GDP, but many other series, including interest rates, retail sales, and unemployment, plus lots of data in Federal Reserve data banks.

Interpreting the Data

Once you’ve got your data and plotted it nicely, what does it mean? There is a small industry in interpreting data, mostly for a price. But a nice web site that provides free data analysis is that of Economic Information Systems.
