  1. Read "How Will We Know If Welfare Reform is Successful?" and follow relevant links from that page. Has welfare reform been successful (so far)? Support your answer with evidence.

  2. How many poor families were there in the most recent year? Go to the U.S. Census Bureau's Poverty page and follow the relevant links. You will have to do some searching. What was the average income deficit for poor families? Will multiplying your answer to the first question by your answer to the second question give the amount of money needed to eliminate poverty among families in the United States? Explain your answer.

  3. The Luxembourg Income Study collects income data from selected countries around the world. Link to the LIS Inequality Indices. Using the most recent data from each country, rank the countries from most to least equal.

  4. Follow the links under Welfare and Welfare Reform below. How was welfare reformed in 1996? Do you think reform of the system was warranted and were the changes made appropriate?
