Chapter 15 - Monopoly

Do Monopolies Advertise?

Yes, even monopolists advertise, to try to increase demand for their products. Check out the web site of DeBeers; it makes you want to run out and buy a diamond or two.

Is Microsoft a Monopoly?

The Justice Department is suing Microsoft, alleging that it engages in monopolistic practices. There’s a lot of useful information about the trial. The web site of MSNBC is interesting, but the MS in MSNBC stands for MicroSoft! The Justice Department has its own site, as does Microsoft. It’s hard to find a neutral view on the trial, but there is a web site concerning how the trial will affect the computer industry, from ITWORKS.

Price Discrimination

The Federal Trade Commission notes that price discrimination is not always legal. It can only be done under certain circumstances and not just to increase profits.

Enforcing Antitrust Laws

Antitrust Laws are enforced by the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission.
