- Was The Wizard of Oz written as part of
the free-silver debate? The case study in your Mankiw textbook presents one
view. For another view, look at The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Website. Read the answer to question 4.5 in "Eric Gjovaag's Wizard of Oz FAQ" (FAQ is an Internet acronym for frequently asked question). What do you think? (Oz fans might try Oz Links for fun.)
Gjovaag is skeptical that there were any political implications to The Wizard of
Oz. L. Frank Baum was not active in politics and included little political
commentary in his other writing. The issue was first raised in 1963, 63 years
after the Wizard was first published. Instructors can decide for themselves
whether to spend time in class on this issue. Your English majors might enjoy
it!
- Find the Consumer
Price Index for the two most recent months. (Use seasonally
adjusted CPI-U from Table 2). What is the CPI for the most recent
month? What is the value of the dollar in the most recent month? What
was the
rate of inflation in the most recent month? What happened to the value
of the dollar in the most recent month?
The link takes the student to the BLS's Consumer Price Index
page. To find the data, the student must click on the link to Table 2.
(Other tables have similar information, but Table 2 is easiest to read.)
The CPI can be read directly from the table. The value of the dollar is
1/CPI. The rate of inflation is calculated as the percentage change in
theCPI between the two months. The change in the value of the dollar =
-(rate of inflation).
