Cyberproblems & Solutions

Monopolistic Competition

  1. Select a monopolistically competitive industry and find the homepages of some of the leading firms in the industry. Discuss some of the ways these firms attempt to differentiate their product. Is the product differentiation real or imagined?

  2. Visit the TV Commercial Hall of Fame featuring Advertising Age's 50 Best Commercials. Review the commercials from your favorite TV decade. How were these commercials used to differentiate the product?

Students must choose a decade. The best commercials are represented by 3 still shots and a brief written description. None of the commercials convey much in the way of information, but each creates a definite image for the product. Instructors might use these examples to discuss the economic role of "non-informative" advertising.
