Consumers, Producers and the Efficiency of Markets

  1. What is a Dutch Auction? Read the rules of a Dutch Auction at Dutch Flower Auction Simulator. Play the game a few times. How does a Dutch Auction differ from the Regular Auction at U-Auction-It mentioned in the chapter 4 webpage? Under which type of auction arrangement do you think buyers will fare better? Which arrangement benefits sellers? [To learn more about Dutch Auctions, read Dutch auctions.]

The Dutch auctions site defines a Dutch auction and explains why they are used. The Dutch Flower Auction Simulator is a game. Students bid against computer-simulated bidders and try to earn the highest profit. The problem is designed to illustrate some of the different ways markets can work and stimulate discussion on the efficiency of different market arrangements.
