Downloading and Installing Software in Windows 3.1

Downloading Software from the Internet
  1. Click on the download link. The browser will ask where you want it to save the software file (a "Save As" dialogue box should pop up). We suggest saving the file in the Temp subdirectory on your hard-drive (usually C:\TEMP), which will make it easy to find. The file can really go anywhere on your hard-drive, since you are downloading a temporary file only. Note: The file will be downloaded to C:\TEMP unless you specified a different subdirectory.

Now your file has been downloaded to the directory you specified, or to your temp directory. The next steps are unzipping the file and installing the software.

Unzipping an Executable File

Most of our files have been posted as self-extracting zipped files. This means that all of the disks that you would normally use to install the software have been scrunched into one file for downloading ease. "Executable" means that you do not have to have unzipping software on your pc to un-scrunch the files.

To unzip a file, follow these steps:

  1. Go into File Manager, locate the drive and directory to which you downloaded the file (i.e., drive C in the temp directory) and double-click on filename.exe. This opens WinZip.
    or
Go into File Manager, click File --> Run, and enter c:\temp\filename.exe and press enter. This will also open WinZip.
  2. WinZip's self-extractor will ask you where you want to put the unzipped files. The extractor will suggest placing the files in the same location as the file you are unzipping. Unless you want to put them somewhere else, go ahead and click the Unzip button.
  3. If you want to place the files in a specific subdirectory, key in the location or browse to it.
  4. The files will be unzipped and placed in the C:\TEMP (or in the folder you designated in the step above).
Installing the Unzipped Software
  1. Go into File Manager, locate the drive and directory where you placed the unzipped files (i.e., drive C in the temp directory) and double-click on Setup.exe.
    or
Go into File Manager, click File --> Run, and enter c:\temp\Setup.exe and press enter (this is assuming that you placed the files in the "temp" directory on the c drive; substitute the appropriate subdirectory name if you placed the files somewhere else).
  2. This launches the installation routine. Follow the steps outlined as the software is installed.
