Ebook Guide

A Walk-thru of the
Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader

Getting Started:

Go to the following internet address to download the Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader. It's Free!
www.adobe.com/products/ebookreader/
This Web page also includes notes for installation and system requirements.
Once you've completed the installation, double-click on the eBook icon on your desktop to start the program.
When you start the program for the first time, the first screen you will see is your Library. Here is a view of a typical Library containing a mixture of eBooks and documents.

South-Western offers a growing selection of textbooks in eBook format.

When you're in the Library, you have the following options:

Once you've selected Read, the Open File button changes to Library. Selecting Library returns you to your Library of eBooks.

If you are running your eBook Reader on the Windows 2000 platform, a Read Aloud button appears above the Library button when in Read mode. Clicking on this button displays simple audio-player controls, which let you hear the spoken text of an eBook (if the publisher has granted permissions to enable this feature).

Use this toolbar to customize how you show and sort your titles in the Library.

The picture above illustrates the default categories. Clicking on any category will display only the eBooks in that category. By selecting the Menu button and choosing Preferences, you can change the list of categories and arrange your eBooks into categories.

You can sort your Library four ways: by Author, by Title, by Date Acquired, and by Last Accessed.

Toolbar Functions - Basic

After you've opened an eBook or document, the toolbar you'll see has the following functions:

* These tools appear after you have selected a book to read. (You won’t see them when you’re in the Library.)

Toolbar Functions - Detailed

Sharpen Text: The Acrobat eBook Reader contains Adobe® CoolType™ technology, which makes text clearer and easier to read. Click the Sharpen Text button to display a two-step dialog box where you can choose the Adobe CoolType settings that make text look best on your screen.

Rotate: To view a landscape oriented page in its correct orientation, you can rotate the eBook window 90 degrees by selecting the Rotate button. Click the Menu button and then choose Preferences to change the direction or rotation.

Highlight:

  • Click the Highlight button, then press the mouse button and move the pointer over a passage to highlight it.
  • Click the Hightlight button again to stop highlighting.
  • To undo highlighting, use the highlighting tool to retrace the section you want to clear.
  • To change color or remove highlighting from a page or the entire eBook, right click and select from the menu that appears.
Two page view: Click the two page view button to view two pages side by side.

Annotate: You can attach hidden or inline notes to text passages. To create a hidden note, click the Annotate button, then click the passage you want to annotate. Type your text in the Note dialog box, then click Save. To create an inline annotation, click the Annotate button, then right-click the passage you want to annotate. Type your text in the borderless text box, then click outside the text box. Either kind of note can be repositioned by clicking and dragging it. Notes can also be modified or deleted.

Bookmarks and Page Navigation

Clicking on a folded top-right corner of a page allows you to bookmark that page. To supply your own text to identify the bookmark, edit the text in the Bookmark box. Click OK.
Use the Page Navigator Bar to go to any page by number. The page navigator bar appears as a segmented line along the bottom of the book display area.
Light-colored segments of the navigator bar represent pages that precede the current page; dark segments represent pages that follow the current page. When you move the pointer over the navigator bar, the bar expands and displays a page number. Click to go to that page.

To go to the next page, click the Next Page button on the toolbar, or press Enter, Down Arrow, or Page Down from your keyboard.

To reposition (pan or scroll) a page within a window, press the right mouse button on the page and drag the page. This feature is especially useful when you want to view all of the text on an enlarged page.

The Menu Toolbar

Click on the Menu button to display this toolbar. To hide, click Menu again.

Info: Clicking on Info will display the following information about your eBook: Title, Author, Publisher, Page Count, Date Acquired, File Size, ISBN, Encryption, Category. Use the two pull-down Category menus to determine where this eBook will be filed in your Library. Click on Permissions to find out the rules for Copying, Printing, Lending, Giving, and Reading Aloud for this eBook.

Bookmarks: From the menu, click Bookmarks to display the Bookmarks dialog box. Click a bookmark in the list and then click Go to Bookmark. From this box you can also add, edit or delete a bookmark.

Find: Use the Find command on the menu to search for text in a eBook. If the search succeeds, a search bar appears at the bottom of the display area where you can continue to search for the same or different text.

Dictionary: The latest version of the Acrobat eBook Reader for Windows (2.1) includes a dictionary. You can use the Dictionary command on the menu to look up a definition. You can also double-click a word in a book to hear the pronunciation and see a definition of that word.

Preferences: The Preferences dialog box allows you to customize the settings of your eBook including the default bookstore URL, the name of your Library and Rotation Direction. You can also reorder and update your eBook Categories for your Library.

Support: To get customer support for the Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader, click Support to visit the Web site http://www.adobe.com/support/ebooksupport.html

Print and Copy: If the publisher allows, you can print and copy portions of a book. Use the Print command on the menu to print some pages of the book. To copy part of the book to the clipboard, first use the mouse to select the text you want to copy, then use the Copy command on the menu to make a copy. The publisher may allow you to print only a limited number of pages or to copy a limited number of selections in a given time period. The Actrobat eBook Reader keeps track of your printing and copying. When you print or copy, a dialog box tells you how much printing or copying you have done and asks whether you want to proceed.
