Troubleshooting
for Adobe Reader
Below
are answers to some common issues that arise while using Adobe Reader.
If you do not find the answers that you are looking for here, please
take a moment to visit Adobe
Reader Support or the Adobe
Reader page.
Locating
an eBook You Just Purchased for Adobe Reader
If
you cannot locate an eBook you recently purchased, it is likely that you
downloaded the eBook before you installed the reader. Find and double-click
a file named ebx.etd. Your eBook will now appear in your Reader
Library. PAGE TOP
Opening
eBooks in Adobe Reader
Be
sure you have installed the Adobe Reader. If you receive a "Cannot
open .etd file" error message when you attempt to open an eBook, you
have installed but not certified the reader. Simply click the Bookstore
link at the bottom of the reader and click Certify Now at the prompt.
After you complete the certification, locate and double-click the
file named ebx.etd. Your eBook will now appear in your Reader Library.

Locating
Previously Downloaded eBooks in Adobe Reader
If you cannot find previously downloaded eBooks in the Adobe Reader
Library, it's most likely that you uninstalled Glassbook Reader before
you installed Adobe Reader. If you deleted the Glassbook Reader folder,
download the missing eBooks again. If you did not delete the Glassbook
Reader folder, do the following:
- In
Windows Explorer, double-click the Program Files\Glassbook\Glassbook
Reader\Data folder.
- Choose
Edit > Select All, and then choose Edit > Copy.
- Double-click
the Program Files\Adobe\Adobe 7.0\, and then choose Edit > Paste.
- In
the Confirm File Replace dialog box, click Yes.
- Open
Adobe Reader, and then open your eBook.

Upgrade
Installation for Former Glassbook Customers
In previous
versions, the Adobe Reader was called the Glassbook® Reader
and had an additional companion product, the Plus Reader. If you already
have a version of the Adobe Reader, you can install this latest version
of Adobe Reader and preserve your existing books and documents.
1)
Before you install the Adobe Reader, ensure that you have not
set the Reader or Plus Reader to be the preferred viewer for PDF documents:
- Start
the Glassbook Reader.
- Click
the Menu button and then click Preferences to display the Preferences
dialog box.
- Clear
the Use the Glassbook Reader as the Primary PDF Reader check box.
- Close
the Preferences dialog box.
- Quit
the Glassbook Reader.
2)
Do not remove (uninstall) the Glassbook Reader.
3)
Download
the Adobe Reader and begin the installation program.
4)
When the installation program asks in which directory to install the
Adobe Reader, the default choice is the directory where the Glassbook
Reader is installed.
5)
Complete the installation.
After you perform an upgrade installation, your computer is likely
to have two desktop icons, one for the Glassbook Reader and one for
the Adobe Reader. Your computer is also likely to have two corresponding
sets of commands on the Windows Programs menu. Both sets of icons
and commands correctly start the Adobe Reader. You may safely remove
the Glassbook Reader icons and commands.

the Adobe
support site if you have any questions.

Certifying
Adobe Reader
You
will be asked to certify Adobe Reader the first time you use it. If
you receive an error while attempting to do so, it may be that the
reader cannot connect to the Internet through a firewall. A firewall
is a software and hardware barrier protecting computers on a network
from being accessed by computers outside the network and sometimes
keeping internal users from getting outside the network. A proxy server
enables users inside a firewall to connect to the Internet. By providing
Internet Explorer with the address to the proxy server via the proxy
settings, you can get through the firewall to certify Adobe Reader.
Adobe Reader uses the proxy settings in Internet Explorer.
To
resolve this issue, verify that the proxy settings in Microsoft Internet
Explorer 4.x or 5.x enable you to get through your firewall. If you do
not know the proxy settings to get through your firewall, consult your
network administrator. To check the proxy settings in Internet Explorer
4.x, choose View > Internet Options, click the Connections tab, and
click Advanced in the Proxy Settings Group. To check the proxy settings
in Internet Explorer 5.x, choose Tools > Internet Options, click the
Connections tab, and click LAN Settings.

System
Requirements
For the PC:
The Adobe Reader works on any PC running Windows Me, Windows 98, Windows
XP, Windows 2000, or Windows NT 4.0. The Adobe Reader requires Microsoft
Internet Explorer version 4.x or 5.x (standard with Windows Me and
Windows 98). It runs best on computers with at least 32MB of memory
and at least an SVGA color display (800x600). It requires about 12MB
of hard disk space for installation. Most eBooks you download require
an average of about 1MB of disk space apiece.
For the Mac:
The Adobe Reader works on any Mac with a PowerPC processor and Mac
OS software 9.0 or 9.1. The Adobe Reader requires Microsoft Internet
Explorer version 4.5 or later, AOL 5.0 or later, or Netscape Communicator
4.x. It runs best on computers with QuickTime version 4. It requires
about 12MB of hard disk space for installation and additional disk
space for eBooks you acquire.
*Due to copyright
restrictions, you may be able to copy, print, or use "read aloud" for
limited portions of the text. In some cases, you may not be able to use
these features at all.

Downloading
Books by Using the AOL Browser (Mac Only)
If
you use the AOL Web browser, you may be prompted to save a file when you
download an eBook. Before you save the file, change its name to ebx.etd
in the Save As dialog box. When you save this file, the book download
proceeds. PAGE TOP
Configuring
the Netscape Communicator Browser to Download eBooks (Mac Only)
If you use the Netscape Communicator Web browser, you must configure
it to download eBooks correctly. Take the following steps after you
install the Adobe Reader:
- In
the Netscape Communicator browser's menu bar, click Edit.
- On
the Edit menu, click Preferences.
- In
the Category box of the Preferences dialog box, click Applications under
the Navigator heading.
-
In the Applications dialog box, click New.
- In
the Edit Type dialog box, enter "EBX Transfer Data File" in the
Description field, "application/x-ebx" in the MIME Type field, "etd"
in the Suffixes field, and "Adobe Reader" in the Handled by application

If
you purchase an eBook before configuring Netscape Communicator in this
way, the browser saves the purchase information in a file named ebx.etd
on your hard disk. PAGE TOP
