General Information

What is an eBook?
An eBook, or electronic book, is a digital book that you can read on a computer screen. We support Adobe® Reader for the PC and Mac (

How do I read an eBook? What is an eBook reader, and where can I get one?
To read an eBook, you must have an eBook reader on your computer. A reader is the software that must be installed on the computer or device to which you download your eBook in order to read it. You can purchase an eBook from South-Western at any time, but you must have Adobe® Reader installed on your computer before you purchase or download an eBook. You can download Adobe® Reader 7.0 for free.

PAGE TOP

Do I need any special software or hardware to run the Adobe® Reader?
Adobe® Reader 7.0 runs on any laptop or desktop PC running Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP; and on Macintosh computers running Mac OS 9 or 9.1. Internet Explorer web browser must be on the system, however, any browser can be used. There's no need to buy any special hardware to read eBooks. For updates and more information, also see the Adobe® site

Is there a time limit on eBooks? What happens to an eBook when I'm done reading it?
There is no time limit for South-Western eBooks. Your eBook will remain on your computer and available for unlmited viewing unless you delete it. Since you own the eBook, you can access it from the Library that is included with the Adobe® Reader and read it as often as desired.

We carry eBook formats that are compatible with the Macintosh and Windows operating systems, and other portable devices. Also see the Adobe® site.

System Requirements For the PC:
The Adobe® Reader works on any PC running Windows Me, Windows 98, Windows 2000, WindowsXP, or Windows NT 4.0. The Adobe® Reader requires Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.x or 5.x (standard with Windows Me and Windows 98). It runs best on computers with at least 32MB of memory and at least an SVGA color display (800x600). It requires about 12MB of hard disk space for installation. Most eBooks you download require an average of about 1MB of disk space apiece.

System Requirements For the Mac:
The Adobe® Reader works on any Mac with a PowerPC processor and Mac OS software 9.0 or 9.1. The Adobe® Reader requires Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.5 or later, AOL 5.0 or later, or Netscape Communicator 4.x. It runs best on computers with QuickTime version 4. It requires about 12MB of hard disk space for installation and additional disk space for eBooks you acquire.

Why should I read eBooks?
There are a number of advantages to reading eBooks. First, you can read them immediately, without having to wait for the title to be shipped to you. You can take them with you anywhere you take your laptop, and the Adobe® reader offers features like highlighting and search.

Won't it strain my eyes to read on the screen?
The Adobe® Reader allows you to "sharpen" the text to make reading on the screen easier and more comfortable.
