News Story

Globalization offers businesses boundless opportunities and the opening-up of untapped markets. The astounding new technologies that have made globalization possible even spark the hope that workers will someday achieve maximum productivity while working less.

Unfortunately, globalization and new technology have not yet produced the personal and professional gains some have imagined. Victor Antonio, a worker at Patni Computers in Boston, states: "The global client base in different time zones, combined with a delivery in multiple time zones, means longer working hours." Such comments are supported by a recent survey of US executives that found middle managers are working more than ever.

Some businesses are seeking positive ways to cope with global pressures and the emergence of the 24-hour workday. Companies aware that employees are working longer hours have started providing 24-hour amenities including cafeterias, gymnasiums, medical clinics and concierge services. Some firms even provide entertainment to employees.

But while such stopgap measures may provide short-term relief to employees, they could fail to provide a true work-life balance. In the end, globalization might create an epidemic of burnout and cause many to long for the past when a good day at the office meant getting home in time for dinner.
