News Story

Instant messaging (IM), the Web-based communication feature popular with teenagers everywhere, is getting an extreme makeover. Internet firms AOL and WebEx have teamed up to make the real-time messaging feature as popular with the boss as it is with everyday consumers.

While there are millions of IM accounts worldwide on public networks, many individuals are beginning to use them at work. Instant messaging on the job has given rise to companies that offer products for administrative control, auditing, and security of instant messaging--securities and banking industries already have embraced these tools. WebEx and AOL believe such trends have prepared businesses for their AIM Pro service.

Web-based communication tools are likely to see continued demand in light of increasing globalization and the need for remote work situations. Yet questions remain about whether companies really need souped-up, buttoned-down, fee-based IM services. If AIM Pro finds even limited workplace uses, WebEx and AOL will receive kudos for having added business functionality to what has been primarily a consumer application.

Questions
1.

What two AIM Pro services will be available to business customers, according to the InfoTrac article?

2.

Why is AIM Pro a sensible, strategic co-marketing initiative for both AOL and WebEx?
